The Complete Guide to the Chigiri-e Tool Kit: PART 2

What is your definition of an excellent craft tool? A tool that fits comfortably in your hand? A tool that provides control for accuracy? Yes, those are important elements of a fine tool. We also think that an excellent craft tool is something you will be able to enjoy years of continued use; it is incredibly significant when thinking about investing in a craft tool.

In the previous blog post of “The Complete Guide to the Chigiri-e Tool Kit: PART 1," three excellent tools for creating Chigiri-e were presented: the stylus pen, tweezers, and paperclips.

Today we are going to introduce four more excellent tools we highly recommend!

Paintbrush: A paintbrush is used to apply glue and arrange fibers in Washi. This flat bristled brush is ideal for creating Chigiri-e because you can use the flat side to work wide spaces while the edges to corners and narrow lines. The thick full bristles work well to get individual strands of Washi fibers in place. The bristles are held to the ferrule firmly so you do not have to worry about hairs staying behind in your glue. When you are done creating Chigiri-e, rinse the brush gently under running water and let it dry. With proper care, this brush will last for a long time to come.

Water Brush Pen: The Pentel Arts Aquash Water Brush is used to bring out even more fibers in the Washi, or to elongate the fibers. You can simply fill water in the barrel and it is ready to use. It also comes in handy when you need to remove chalk marks from the artboard. This versatile pen/paintbrush is also great for your painting projects with watercolors, inks and markers to spread and smooth colors. The manufacturer, Pentel is a Japanese company with more than seventy years of history known for producing high quality and durable stationary products.

Teaspoon and Saucer: The stainless steel teaspoon is used for measuring the amount of glue and water at a ratio of 1 to 3. The plastic saucer is small and lightweight but has an enough well to hold diluted glue for any Chigiri-e project. Just rinse with running water any residual glue from your spoon and saucer after use, and they will keep their brand new looks for a very long time.

The two magnificent animals on this painting are Karajishi, lions of foreign land. Karajishi is one of the iconographic symbols of power in Japan that is believed to drive off evil spirits and represents strong authority and ability. Even though no one ever saw the real beast before arrival of the modern age, Japanese artists had been inspired by descriptions heard by the Chinese to create the mythological figure which looked like a mix of a dragon and a dog.
